"Writing is nature’s way of letting us see how sloppy our thinking is.”

During the dreary days of February when middle school students have their minds on things other than learning, don’t forget the importance of elaborative rehearsal.
In Brain Matters:  Translating Research into Classroom Practice, Patricia Wolfe suggests that elaborative rehearsal strategies encourage the learner to “elaborate on the information in a manner that enhances understanding and retention of that information.”
Writing is one such strategy.  Writing activities help students to organize, clarify and express their ideas and they can be used in any subject area—not just ELA!

Check out some of the writing activities in the MILES binder.  Many of them can be used as a “bell ringer” or “ticket out the door.”
