Addressing the Momo Challenge

Friday, March 1, 2019

I’m sure by now many of you have heard about The Momo Challenge. The latest viral “game” features a scary doll-like creature that encourages participants to complete disturbing and sometimes dangerous tasks to avoid being “cursed.”

The challenge reportedly has been embedded in popular children’s videos that appear on social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube for Kids.

While it has been difficult to confirm if The Momo Challenge is real or just a hoax, it once again reminds us how important Internet safety is for our children. Social media has become a way of life for our students, and it is important that we ensure their online interactions are safe, productive and positive.

Common Sense Media, the nation's leading non-profit organization dedicated to providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice that kids and families need to thrive in the 21st century, offers a number of resources regarding social media. This includes tips on how to talk to your child about what they are sharing, posting and seeing online. The site also provides sample family media agreements and device contracts for those who may want a guide to managing media consumption. You can find more information by visiting the Common Sense Media Web site (click here).

The site also offers similar information regarding television shows, movies, books and games.

As always, if you or your child have concerns regarding his or her use of social media, please do not hesitate to contact your school’s counseling staff for assistance.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mark F. Potter
Superintendent of Schools
